For April: The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness

BAM. Yes, I am cheating since there are three books, including one that I read in 2010, but these books are epic and brilliant. It’s been a few weeks since I turned the last page in Monsters of Men and I am still constantly thinking about these characters and world. You can read my full review here.

Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Characters

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and features a new top ten list each week.

Favorite Characters

Being forced to choose will be torture, but HERE WE GO.

10. Sean Kendrick from The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater – Oh GOD. Sean is quiet and subdued, but he feels so much and he loves his horse and Puck and…GUH, LOVE.

09. Mary Quinn from The Agency series by Y.S. Lee – Girl detective in Victorian times! Mary is amazeballs and totally holds her own in any and all situations. YOU ONLY WISH YOU COULD BE AS AMAZING AS HER.

08. Etienne St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins – Can I sneak Cricket in here too? YES! Okay, but seriously…Steph Perkins writes the most perfect boys ever and St. Clair (and Cricket!) is an absolute delight.

07. Arya Stark from the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin – Love her on the show, love her in the books — in both she is the POV I look forward to the most.

06. Rudy Steiner from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – As Death himself said, “He steps on my heart. He makes me cry.” RUDYYYYYYYYY.

05. Todd Hewitt & Viola Eade from the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness – YES, THEY GET TO SHARE THIS SPOT BECAUSE THEY ARE THE EPITOME OF GOODNESS AND STRENGTH. Seriously, these two…your faves could never.

04. Adrian Ivashkov from the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead – Uh, Dimitri who?! Ha, in all seriousness, Adrian is all sorts of messed up, and he has a long way to go to grow up, but he is lovable. PLUS, SKELETON TATTOOS, ETC.

03. Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling – WEASLEY IS MY KING. Ronald has been with me for over ten years and my loyalty to him has never wavered. If only I could be a Weasley!

02. Finnick Odair from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Oh, Finnick! From the sugar cubes and then onwards, I would have never expected to love him so much and yet…he is my favorite of the series. I will raise hell if/when they mess up his casting in Catching Fire.

01. Ha, no, I am not choosing – Did you really think I would? I LOVE TOO MANY AND YOU CAN’T MAKE ME. So, yes, this spot will remain empty in dedication of the gazillion others I love.

Review:
Finishing Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking books has been a long time coming. I first read The Knife of Never Letting Go in October of 2010 and I loved it. But I was also crushed by certain events, so I was terrified of what was to come in the following installments. I had The Ask and the Answer sitting in my bookshelf since then and I kept saying, “I’ll read it soon, I’ll read it soon,” but I never quite got the courage to actually pick it up. Aylee’s reviews (here and here) were definitely a motivation, but it wasn’t until my friend Linda sped through the series, and then began nagging me to get a move on, that I finally decided to go for it. I’m so glad! It was a draining roller coaster to read the series, but it’s easily become one of my absolute favorites. Here are some thoughts on each of the three books:

The Knife of Never Letting Go – Like I said, it’s been well over a year since I read it so here’s my initial review from goodreads: This one kept my heart pounding! With a first person, present tense narration, complete with Todd’s own dialect, it was very easy to get pulled in. With Todd being so young I wasn’t sure how much I would relate to his character, but I found myself valuing his growth as he learned the real meaning of becoming a man.The book went to some very dark, dark places, leaving me absolutely drained; I’m still mourning over a certain character’s death. I felt enough questions were answered along the way, but of course I’m anxious to get a start on the sequel. Fantastic read!

The Ask and the Answer – Can I just immediately say how seamlessly Patrick Ness is able to alternate between POVs? His character’s voices are so distinct, so different from the other, and he easily kept me fully immersed in both. Todd and Viola endured through SO much and their character arcs are some of my favorites in recent memory. Similarly, this book confirmed the complexity of the world and characters that Patrick Ness created. Though his book is set in another world, the themes he presented are so easily applicable to ours. Certain side characters? Wow…I had no idea that they could be redeemed and that I could grow to care for them so much. And, yes, I sobbed.

Monsters of Men – TODD AND VIOLA. THESE KIDS. I wanted to hold them close and keep them safe, but I was also so proud of their maturity, strength, and how they’re such genuinely good people. Thinking back to the first book it’s so easy to recall their innocence; it makes me so sad that they had to experience so much loss and so many struggles throughout the course of the series. Their relationship was subtle, beautifully depicted, and I loved how they drew strength from each other in the most bleak of situations. Patrick Ness continued to make a mess of my emotions with his characters. There was no clear good and evil in this series because the characters were so layered with flaws and complexities that captured the very essence of human nature.

Patrick Ness easily has one of my favorite endings for a book series in Monsters of Men. I know there are readers that are clamoring for more, but there was enough and there was hope — the perfect way to end it, in my opinion.

After having read this series and A Monster Calls, Patrick Ness easily earns a spot in my favorite authors list and a guarantee that I will read anything he writes. He is brilliant and captures so much emotion in his writing. Oh, and he makes me ugly cry every single time. I can’t wait to see what he writes next and I urge you to give Chaos Walking a read.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books On My Spring TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and features a new top ten list each week.

Books On My Spring TBR List

I have a lot of spring cleaning to do with the books on my shelves, so I am definitely including some titles I already own along with the newer ones.

01. The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness – The first book broke my heart into a million little pieces, yes, but I have delayed reading the last two books long enough. OVER A YEAR. I really plan to get to this soon.

02. A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin – Erm, yeah. I’m actually somewhere in the middle of this one already, but these books are massive and my attention span has been ZILCH. My plan is to finish it before the new season stars.

03. This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel – I was sooo excited to read this and then…I didn’t. There have been pretty good reviews for it, too, so I don’t get why I haven’t gotten to it.

04. Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler – I bought this ages ago for a really great price and it has nothing but amazing reviews from my goodreads pals. What gives?! Probably the fact that I don’t read a lot of contemporary, but still.

05. The Traitor In The Tunnel by Y.S. Lee – ONLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE SERIES EVER. I suck. I need more James and Mary in my life so it’s dumb to deprive myself.

06. Insurgent by Veronica Roth – DUH. Is there any explanation needed? No.

07. Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore – I am so, so excited to return to this world and see some familiar faces. I loved Fire more than I did Graceling so I have my fingers crossed I’ll love this one the most.

08. Shine by Jeri Smith-Ready – There are a lot of great May releases and this is one of them. I am very curious to find out how this series will conclude (in tears, I’m sure).

09. Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Jennifer L. Armentrout really knows how to keep a reader hooked so I’m excited for her to do it again in the second installment of her Covenant series.

10. Revived by Cat Patrick – I LOVED Cat Patrick’s Forgotten so I am looking forward to seeing this one play out.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Broke My Heart A Little

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, here is my first time participating in Top Ten Tuesday.

Top 10 Books That Broke Your Heart A Little

I’m an emotional freak, I cry over just about everything, but here are the ten books that immediately came to mind (in no particular order):

01. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - I just posted my review for this one recently, but I will repeat myself: I was sooo overwhelmed by the combination of feeling so much happiness and sadness at the same time. Beautiful, beautiful book.

02. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness – If you’ve read this book then you probably know what scene left me feeling so drained. I actually had to step away from reading for a while because I was crying too much. If I even think about it, I feel teary, ahhhhhhhh.

03. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – This book is pretty much the definition of heartbreak. Enough said.

04. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver – Lauren Oliver is an author that always makes me cry and this is the first time she managed to get those tears flowing out of my eyes. It was an incredible journey with Sam and YEAH…tears.

05. The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater – Yes, this had some sad moments, but it mostly broke my heart because it was so perfect. Does that even make sense? Whatever, go with it. I was weeping when it was over.

06. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness – I feel the same way about this book that I do The Book Thief: it is so brutal and brilliant and leaves me needing someone to hold me while I sob uncontrollably.

07. Where She Went by Gayle Forman – Tears were expected with If I Stay, but they were out of control with this one. Adam was a tornado of emotions and Gayle Forman did such an amazing job in having the reader experience them with him.

08. The Amber by Spyglass by Phillip Pullman – IF YOU DID NOT CRY OVER THAT ENDING, YOU ARE NOT HUMAN. No, but really, it is devastating.

09. The Help by Kathryn Stockett – If you’ve seen the movie then you have an idea of how touching the material is. And yet the book was 100x more affecting; I grew to love the characters so, so much.

10. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins – This book was hella depressing. It was bleak and my favorite died. Really, I felt so gutted reading this book.

Did any of my picks make your list? What books broke your heart?
