After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

ALIENS. I’ve had some weird fascination with aliens since I was a kid (aka FEAR), and while I enjoy alien love interests in paranormal romances and whatnot, I’m always on the lookout for something a little more…unsettling. I haven’t read Rick Yancey’s Monstrumologist books (yet), but I’ve heard great things about the atmosphere he created in those books, so I’m eager to experience some paranoia, creepiness and overall awesome in The 5th Wave. SOMEBODY GET THIS BOOK IN MY HANDS.

What are you waiting on this week?

Quinn’s done the unthinkable: she kissed a guy who is not Carey, her boyfriend. And she got caught. Being branded a cheater would be bad enough, but Quinn is deemed a traitor, and shunned by all of her friends. Because Carey’s not just any guy—he’s serving in Afghanistan and revered by everyone in their small, military town.

Quinn could clear her name, but that would mean revealing secrets that she’s vowed to keep—secrets that aren’t hers to share. And when Carey goes MIA, Quinn must decide how far she’ll go to protect her boyfriend…and her promise. – Goodreads

Review:
I have to admit that I struggled with parts of Corrine Jackson’s If I Lie. No, it wasn’t because it was dull or badly written in any way, but it was very hard to not feel an overwhelming sadness for the main character, Quinn. She’s stuck in a difficult situation, caught between loyalty and the truth, and I am not exaggerating when I say that this book HURT.

When If I Lie opens up, Quinn has already been ostracized and horribly bullied by her school peers for cheating on her boyfriend, Carey. Her friends have turned their backs on her and then Carey goes MIA, which only makes things harder for her. If this had been any other book I would have expected Quinn to go crying into some guy’s shoulder and for the book’s pages to be filled with their love story, blah blah blah. It goes to show that I always expect the worst from a lot of contemporary reads, but Corrine Jackson pleasantly surprised me by not losing sight of Quinn’s individual journey. Quinn’s home life isn’t very easy, either. Her mother walked out on her family several years before and her father is closed off, almost seeming to hate Quinn for her mother’s mistakes. Between her family and friends, Quinn is very much alone and I cried for all that she had to endure. I don’t know if I could have withheld the truth like Quinn did, but I definitely admired her selflessness.

If I Lie doesn’t have a happily ever after ending, but it does have an honest conclusion. The pain doesn’t magically go away, there’s a loss of trust, and all ties aren’t mended, but there’s growth and the opportunity to find the strength to move on. Corrine Jackson’s If I Lie is raw and often painful, but it will get under your skin and have you thinking about it for days after.

Thursday’s This and That #3

Lots of bookish stuff ahead in this week’s This and That because I’m boring and my interests are very limited. WHAT CAN I SAY.

New Harry Potter covers

I woke up yesterday and laid in bed scrolling through my twitter feed, AS I DO, when I saw a tweet about new Harry Potter covers coming out. I sat up immediately and went, “WHAT.” Before I clicked on the link I was a little alarmed, but when I saw the artwork I went, “WANT.” It has similarities to the original U.S. covers, which is great, but I get such a more magical feel from this one. I’m definitely going to get my hands on these!

The Delirium TV Show

Here’s one thing I probably won’t be watching. I’m not a big TV viewer as it is, and I’m very iffy on Lena’s casting, but these changes? NO THANK YOU. I’m all about giving things a chance, but not when they’re so drastically different. Little changes in certain movie adaptations annoy me, so this would be too much for me to stomach.

Vampire Academy

I’m in a very Richelle Mead state of mind right now because, HELLO, The Indigo Spell! But the movie stuff for Vampire Academy is pretty exciting, too! I’m not familiar with the cast at all, but they’re very pretty and I think they fit the characters well, appearance wise. I’ll definitely be checking this out when it releases next year!

The Host

I randomly threw this in here because I just got done watching The Host cast on their live chat and they are ADORABLE. They also released the third trailer and it’s definitely my favorite of the ones released. ALSO, PRETTY!!

If you haven’t read the book, YOU SHOULD.

Tegan and Sara: Heartthrob

Oh, hey, something not book related! I hadn’t listened to Tegan & Sara for YEARS, but when I saw that they had a new album on Spotify I thought, “Why not?” It’s different from what I remember of them, but I’ve really been enjoying it and I’ve had the album on heavy rotation. Here’s my current favorite track:

Okay, that’s all. What do you all think? Will you be getting the new Harry Potter covers? Excited for any of these adaptations? What music are you listening to?

Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Romances

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and features a new top ten list each week.

Top Ten Nine Favorite Romances

It was very difficult not to get out of control with this week’s topic so I am limiting myself to mostly recent(ish) book couples. Bear with me and my ramblings ahead.

Sydney + Adrian

(Bloodlines by Richelle Mead) – Alright, so yeah, I was super attached to the idea of Adrian and Rose in the Vampire Academy books, but Sydney and Adrian are something else altogether. I’ve loved their growing friendship and The Golden Lily had me puking rainbows (and then crying). I’m so, so excited to get to The Indigo Spell!

Puck + Sean
(The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater) – Ugh, this romance was so quiet and sweet that I could CRY. Maggie Stiefvater definitely brought the swoon with these two and more people should love them!!

Mary + James
(The Agency series by Y.S. Lee) – CHEMISTRY LIKE WHOA. Seriously, their banter is the best of the best and the kissing isn’t bad either (ALSO THE BEST).

Lena + Julian
(Delirium series by Lauren Oliver) – Alex, wah wah wah. NO. I liked him in the first book, but then Julian came along and angels sang. His relationship with Lena was so well developed. I WANT TO KNOW. I WANT TO KNOW WITH YOU.

Ian + Wanderer

(The Host by Stephenie Meyer) – They were so unexpected and yet so damn great. Their friendship evolved into such a lovely relationship. I’m curious to see how their romance will play out on screen!

Elisa + Hector
(Fire and Thorns series by Rae Carson) – So much mutual respect and admiration between these two! Rae Carson has truly allowed their relationship to feel so natural and I’m so anxious to find out what happens in book three.

Clara + Christian & Clara + Tucker
(Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand) – No, you are not seeing things, I do have both Tucker AND Christian up there. This never happens: I always have THE guy I’m rooting for and yet…I love them both and I’ve had strong feelings about this series since I read the last book. AHHHHH.

Anna + St. Clair
(Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins) – Um, there’s not much to say with these two except for the fact that they are the most delightful EVER. Seriously, their story never fails to bring the warm fuzzies. It doesn’t get any better than this, folks.

Yes, nine because I won’t can’t make up my mind about the last one. Who makes up your list? Hope you all get lots of sweets for Valentine’s Day!

With the clock ticking until the virus takes its toll, Rhine is desperate for answers. After enduring Vaughn’s worst, Rhine finds an unlikely ally in his brother, an eccentric inventor named Reed. She takes refuge in his dilapidated house, though the people she left behind refuse to stay in the past. While Gabriel haunts Rhine’s memories, Cecily is determined to be at Rhine’s side, even if Linden’s feelings are still caught between them.

Meanwhile, Rowan’s growing involvement in an underground resistance compels Rhine to reach him before he does something that cannot be undone. But what she discovers along the way has alarming implications for her future—and about the past her parents never had the chance to explain.

In this breathtaking conclusion to Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden trilogy, everything Rhine knows to be true will be irrevocably shattered. – Goodreads

Review:
It’s always hard to write reviews for the final book in a series because I want to SCREAM about specific things, but I obviously can’t do that without ruining things for others. As such, this review will probably be a short one. Here’s what you need to know:

As you may or may not recall, Fever was not my type of book. Like, at all. Lauren DeStefano’s prose was beautiful, but I felt that the plot itself lacked direction and I was definitely disappointed by it since I had loved Wither so much. I can’t say that I enjoyed Sever as much as the first book, but it picked up steam in a major way and the entire time I was reading it I was like, “Yes, HERE is the emotion that I missed from book two.”

Because, for better or for worse, there was plenty of emotion to be had in Sever. Lauren DeStefano reminded me of the strength between the sister wives: how far their bond went and their place in each other’s lives. I was able to get back into Rhine’s mindset and feel her determination to reunite with her brother. Lauren DeStefano allowed me to have a better grasp on several characters: to understand their motivations, their fears, and their realizations about the world. I was left staring at the book in shock when certain developments arose and, right now, days after having turned the last page, I’m still remembering the “Noooooooo” moment I had. I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THAT MOMENT.

There are a few issues I had with Sever, namely that one particular character remained too underdeveloped for my liking and that ending could have been expanded on, but I definitely feel that this book made up for what I felt was lacking in Fever. Lauren DeStefano filled in the gaps, allowed her characters to grow and, overall, delivered a satisfying conclusion. I’m looking forward to getting to know the characters in her next series.
