Aura’s life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can’t deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she’s not sure that she wants to.

Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.

As Aura’s search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart. – Goodreads

Review:
I picked this up before bed with the intention of only reading a few chapters, but I soon found myself fully immersed back in this world, staying up past 3AM to finish it. Better than Shade? I think so.

Shift picks up right where we left off in Shade and moves quickly from there with a new twist – one that gives Aura a moment of hope, filled with doubt and complete urgency. It completely threw me for a loop and made me curious to see how this new development would affect the story. I thought I had an idea, but Logan is an unpredictable character so he obviously took it in a different direction – one with a great character arc that truly demonstrated his growth from the first book.

Aura and Zachary also went through plenty of growth in this one, too. They made mistakes, both doing things that made me want to shake them – Aura especially – but I had to remind myself that they’re still kids. They’re meant to screw up! Their actions all came across as very genuine to me, perfectly displaying their many conflicting emotions. Even while they were ticked off at one another, they still made an excellent team, and it made it all that more obvious what a good fit they were.

With the first book it was very difficult for me to choose between the two boys but, while I do love both, Shift pushed my loyalties toward Zachary. I feel that Logan holds Aura back, while Zachary pushes her for more and ignites a spark that we only see when she’s with him. That said, Logan is still the one that makes me cry. I felt that there was more of his friendship with Aura in this one which only added to how bittersweet their relationship is.

After the very emotional ending in this one, I’m excited to see what Jeri Smith-Ready has in store for us in Shine. I’ll be sad to see the series come to an end, but I have no doubt it will be an amazing conclusion.

  1. Oh my gosh, better than Shade?! Ahhh! So excited to read this! I loved Shade and the fact that Shift pushed you more toward Zachary is heaven to my ears, because it means more of his sweetness. Zach <3 I can't wait to see how the story progresses and I'm definitely liking the 'emotional ending'. Great review!
